Question Taken At January 25, 2008 Daily Press Briefing

Russia: Mogilevich Arrest

Question: Why was Semion Mogilevich, the head of an Eastern European organized crime group and wanted by the FBI, just arrested in Moscow? Why did the arrest come at this time, seeing as how he’s been wanted by the FBI for more than a decade?

Semion Mogilevich was arrested by Russian law enforcement authorities on Russian charges. Mr. Mogilevich is wanted in the United States on grand jury charges of racketeering, securities fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering. We refer you to the Department of Justice for further information on U.S. charges and to the Russian Government for further details on the situation there.
