Japan: Deputy Foreign Minister Sasae’s Meetings in Washington, DC (Taken Question)

Question: Provide readouts of Under Secretary Burns and Assistant Secretary Hill’s meetings yesterday with Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Sasae.

Answer: In their January 28 meeting, Under Secretary Burns and Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Sasae discussed Japan’s priorities for its G8 Presidency, which include climate change, development in Africa, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism, and peace-building. Under Secretary Burns reiterated United States support for Japan’s bid for a permanent UN Security Council seat, and discussed the importance of UN reform. They also exchanged views on Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, India, Pakistan, and Burma.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sasae met with EAP Assistant Secretary Hill to discuss U.S.-Japan cooperation and coordination on bilateral as well as regional and global issues, including the Six-Party Talks.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sasae also met with Deputy Secretary John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Dan Fried to discuss G8 and other global issues of mutual interest.
