Question: When was the last time a U.S. official at this level traveled to Damascus to discuss non-refugee issues? When was the last visit to Syria by an Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs?
Answer: Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage visited Damascus in January 2005. William J. Burns visited Damascus in September 2004 in his previous capacity as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.
