Bosnian Constitutional Amendment on Brcko District

Press Statement
Robert Wood
Acting Department Spokesman, Bureau of Public Affairs, Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
March 20, 2009

The United States supports the draft constitutional amendment on the Brcko District currently before the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This amendment would ensure that Brcko’s status, as defined by the awards of the Brcko Arbitral Tribunal, is recognized and protected in the Bosnian constitution and would afford Brcko direct access to the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We welcome the dialogue and compromise that produced the draft amendment. The United States will continue to support Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and its development as a modern, multi-ethnic European democracy.
