Press Statement
Ian Kelly
Department Spokesman, Bureau of Public Affairs, Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
May 20, 2009

The United States welcomes the ongoing talks begun in Nouakchott on May 14 under Senegalese and Libyan sponsorship involving all political actors necessary to resolve the political crisis in Mauritania. We strongly encourage all parties to work toward a consensual solution leading to a return to constitutional order in accordance with the call of the international community embodied in the statement of the International Contact Group on February 20, 2009. These talks come at a critical moment in the search to find a solution that can enjoy international support and end Mauritania’s isolation.
