Georgia: "Parliamentary Elections" in South Ossetia

Press Statement
Robert Wood
Deputy Department Spokesman, Bureau of Public Affairs, Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
June 1, 2009

The United States regrets the decision to hold so-called “elections” in the South Ossetia region of Georgia on May 31, 2009, and recognizes neither the legality nor the results. This represents a step away from a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict. The U.S. reiterates its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
