We welcome the EU Council of Ministers’ adoption of the joint U.S.-EU statement regarding the closure of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility and Future Counterterrorism Cooperation. Based on our shared values of freedom and democracy, and drawing from our respect for international law, the rule of law and human rights, the joint statement provides a framework that permits individual EU member states to accept detainees. We thank our European colleagues, particularly the Czech Presidency, the EU counterterrorism coordinator and the Commission, for their help and willingness to join with us in closing the Guantanamo facility and deepening transatlantic cooperation in counterterrorism. We look forward to the EU’s continuing partnership on this challenging issue.
