Ian Kelly
Department Spokesman
Washington, DC
September 17, 2009

We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in the brutal attack in Afghanistan today, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The United States strongly condemns this senseless act of violence that resulted in multiple Afghan and Italian deaths, as well as numerous injuries.

This vicious act of terrorism reinforces the need for the U.S. and allies, in partnership with the people of Afghanistan, to continue our critical work. We are united in our commitment to defeat the extremist elements, whose intention is to destroy the freedom and dignity to which all people are entitled.
