Deputy Secretary's Travel to Colombia and Peru January 11-14

Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg will begin a week-long trip to Colombia and Peru on Monday, January 11. Both countries are important partners of the United States and have contributed greatly to our shared goals in the region.

Deputy Secretary Steinberg arrives in Colombia Monday evening and will meet with Colombian President Uribe and senior Colombian government officials the following day to discuss the current state of the U.S.-Colombia bilateral relationship and issues of mutual interest. During the remainder of his trip, the Deputy Secretary will meet with representatives of civil society, human rights organizations, and the private sector to hear their perspectives on developments in Colombia and on ways to continue to strengthen relations between our two countries.

Deputy Secretary Steinberg will then travel to Peru, where he will meet with high level Peruvian officials on January 14. The Deputy Secretary plans to discuss the bilateral relationship, U.S. programs in Peru, and ways to deepen cooperation based on shared values and interests, including democracy, counternarcotics, trade, and economic development.
