January 25, 2010

The United States and Indonesia are co-sponsoring a conference of religious leaders and civic organizations on the subject of “Building Collaborative Communities: Enhancing Cooperation among People of Different Faiths.” The event will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 25-27 January 2010.

This event will bring together top Indonesian religious leaders, prominent American religious figures, and a number of religious leaders from neighboring Asian countries. Several non-governmental organizations will also participate. Participants will focus on sharing best practices and enhancing collaboration in areas such as poverty alleviation, education, environmental protection, and local governance. As President Obama said in Cairo, “Around the world, we can turn dialogue into interfaith service, so bridges between peoples lead to action.”

The working conference is being generously hosted by the Republic of Indonesia, and will be facilitated by the international non-governmental organization Religions for Peace. This conference opens the way for new working partnerships between faith groups and civic leaders in South-East Asia. Participants will seek opportunities to work together to address challenges of community development in the region.

Events to inaugurate interfaith working groups in other regions of the world are also being planned.
