Question Taken at the March 17, 2010 Daily Press Briefing
QUESTION: Has the trial in the civil lawsuit filed by Rachel Corrie's family against Israel begun in Israel? If so, is a U.S. official attending the trial?
ANSWER: Since Rachel Corrie's tragic death in March 2003, the Department of State along with the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv has been in close contact with the family to provide them with support and assistance. The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv is attending the trial, which opened in Haifa, Israel on March 10. For seven years, we repeatedly have pressed the Government of Israel at the highest levels to conduct a thorough, transparent and credible investigation into the circumstances concerning her death. We hope that this venue will finally provide the Corrie family with answers regarding the death of Rachel.
