Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer's Travel to Lithuania, Russia, and Egypt

On April 10, 2010, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer began a two-week trip to Lithuania, Russia, and Egypt. The Ambassador will meet with senior government officials and non-government leaders to discuss progress towards achieving women’s empowerment in the political, social, and economic arenas, combating gender-based violence, and improving maternal health.

While in Lithuania, the Ambassador will launch the Community of Democracies Working Group on Gender Equality, which the U.S. is co-sponsoring with Lithuania, as well as participate in a panel at Vilnius University to discuss ways to increase women’s political participation.

In St. Petersburg, Russia, she will meet with the governor and NGO leaders, and, in Moscow, she will meet with members of the Duma and with the NGO community. She will also travel to Barnaul, in southern Siberia, with U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle, where she will observe NGO efforts to enhance women’s economic opportunities.

She will conclude her trip in Egypt (April 18-23), where she will meet with senior Egyptian Government and non-government leaders to discuss women’s development and empowerment issues and programs. In Cairo, she will meet with university students and young entrepreneurs. In Alexandria, Ambassador Verveer will take part in a conference on global women’s development issues and visit the Suzanne Mubarak Regional Centre for Women’s Health and Development. She will also visit USAID-sponsored health, education and micro-finance programs in Aswan. Finally, she will announce U.S.-Egypt cooperation to train Afghan midwives in Egypt.
