The United States is deeply saddened by the deaths of four Spanish soldiers in an April 16 helicopter crash during a humanitarian mission in Haiti. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
By request of the Spanish Government, and in coordination with the Government of Haiti, the United States military assisted over the weekend in the recovery of the Spanish soldiers’ remains. The United States and Spain will continue to work together closely on relief efforts for Haiti, alongside the Haitian Government, the United Nations, and all our international partners and NGOs on the ground. The contributions and sacrifices of Spain, and support from nations around the globe, are vital to Haiti’s recovery.
