Special Press Briefing for Earth Day With Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs

Under Secretary of State Maria Otero will brief the press on the Department of State’s Celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Carl T. Rowan Press Briefing Room (Room 2209) of the Department of State. The daily press briefing with Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Philip J. Crowley will follow this special press briefing.

The Department of State will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day as well as the first anniversary of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Greening Diplomacy Initiative on April 21 (the eve of Earth Day, which is April 22) in the Dean Acheson Auditorium.

As Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Under Secretary Otero oversees the bureaus of Population, Refugees and Migration; Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs; and the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. She also serves as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.

Press should use the 23rd Street entrance of the Department of State. Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
