Secretary Clinton to Deliver Remarks at the Virginia Military Institute and Receive VMI's Distinguished Diplomat Award on April 28

Editor's Note: Secretary Clinton’s speech at the Virginia Military Institute originally schedule for Wednesday, April 28, has beenpostponed until Fall 2010.

Secretary Clinton will visit the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) the evening of April 28, 2010. Her remarks will discuss smart power one year later, and how the United States is integrating diplomacy, defense, and development together into its day to day foreign policy. Secretary Clinton will also receive VMI’s Distinguished Diplomat Award.

The event is open to credentialed press. Access logistics will be announced in the public schedule. Credentialed members of the press can RSVP to

The Distinguished Diplomat Award was established in 1996 by VMI’s Department of International Studies and Political Science. It is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in advancing U.S. interests abroad through diplomacy.

Former Distinguished Diplomat Award recipients include former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton; James Lilley, former Ambassador to South Korea and China; Jean Kirkpatrick, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; James Woolsey, former Director of central intelligence and Head of the Central Intelligence Agency; and foreign affairs strategist Susan Eisenhower.

Directions: Traveling south on I-81 –‚Ä®take Exit 191 onto Interstate 64 toward Charleston, W.Va. Take the first exit to Lexington. At the top of the ramp, turn left onto U.S. Rt. 11 South. Follow the signs to downtown Lexington (Rt. 11 Business (Main Street)). Immediately past the football field is Cameron Hall on the left. The press entrance will be from the small parking lot between the football field and Cameron Hall.

Parking: Limited press parking is available adjacent to Cameron Hall.
