On Wednesday, May 5, the State Department will host more than 600 middle and high school students from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for the seventh annual Global Classrooms D.C. (GCDC) Model United Nations Conference. This one-day event is the culmination of a unique year-long program which links State Department volunteers to participating schools and students.

Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Dr. Esther Brimmer will deliver the keynote address at the program’s opening ceremony, which will also feature remarks from Karen Mulhauser, President of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (the organizing body) and Dr. Jon Andrus, Deputy Director of the Pan-American Health Organization.

Through GCDC, middle and high school students and teachers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area participate in year-round activities to help them understand the UN system, increase their knowledge of other cultures and traditions, improve their ability to think analytically and creatively, and tackle global problems collectively. This conference provides students the opportunity to apply what they have learned, develop their conflict resolution skills, and role-play as foreign delegates working toward international solutions.
