Departments of State and Labor are convening high-level U.S. officials and representatives of labor, business, non-governmental organizations and human rights groups to meet in the Loy Henderson Conference Room at the U.S. Department of State on June 8, 2010 for a day-long conference on effective strategies and policies to combat exploitative child labor.
Participants in the conference will include Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Michael Posner, Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Deputy Undersecretary of Labor for International Affairs Sandra Polaski, Special Representative for International Labor Affairs, Barbara Shailor, along with American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, Amnesty International USA Executive Director Larry Cox, Chair of the Education for All - Fast Track Initiative Secretariat Board of Directors Carol Bellamy, and journalists Kyle Gibson and Laura Rozen.
The conference, which marks official U.S. commemoration of World Day Against Child Labor, will feature plenary sessions, panel discussions, in-person and internet audience participation. It will also be available on a live, interactive Webcast. In addition to the Departments of State and Labor, the American Federation of Teachers, the No Limits Foundation, and the International Labor Rights Forum are co-sponsors of the event.
Panel discussions will be open to credentialed members of the media with an RSVP to Stephanie Martone. Media is welcome to attend all or some of the panels and should enter the State Department through the 23rd Street entrance at least 15 minutes before the start of each session.
