Question: Do the sanctions against Iran under UNSCR 1929 prohibit the Russian sale of S-300 missiles?
Answer: UNSCR 1929 prohibits the sale or transfer of items on the UN Register of Conventional Arms, which does not include the S-300. However, for the first time, the resolution calls for States to exercise vigilance and restraint in the sale or transfer of all other arms and related materiel. We appreciate Russia’s restraint in the transfer of the S-300 missile system to Iran.
