Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela visited Managua, Nicaragua, on October 28. During this visit he met with President Daniel Ortega, Foreign Minister Santos, Chief of Defense Aviles, National Police Chief Granera, and other political, business, and civil society leaders as well as donor partners to discuss cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
During his meetings, Assistant Secretary Valenzuela discussed issues including working together to fight narcotrafficking, promoting citizen safety, increasing economic opportunity, guaranteeing energy security, strengthening democratic institutions, and the importance of transparent electoral processes.
