Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs David Johnson is traveling to Paris, London, Brussels, Berlin, Oslo, and Rome from November 15-19, 2010.
In each of these capitals, Assistant Secretary will be meeting with government officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Ministries of Interiors to discuss an initiative to bolster policing in peacekeeping missions, the International Police Peacekeeping Operations Support (IPPOS) program.
The IPPOS program aims to build capacity of United Nations’ police contributors to deploy to on peacekeeping missions. This program will collaborate with police contributing countries to conduct an assessment of their needs and develop a tailored assistance package to include training, equipment, and refurbishment to training facilities, based on UN standards. This effort will professionalize police peacekeepers so they can fulfill complex Security Council mandates, which involve tasks such as protecting civilians and reforming police agencies.
