The following is the text of a joint statement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs Luís Amado following their bilateral meeting in Lisbon.

Begin text:

During the meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Minister of Foreign Affairs Luís Amado that took place in Lisbon, on November 19, 2010, the United States and Portugal reaffirmed their enduring political alliance.

Both governments share the view that it would be beneficial to the United States and Portugal to expand and enhance bilateral cooperation across a range of policy areas.

The 1995 Agreement on Cooperation and Defense and its Standing Bilateral Commission provide the necessary flexibility and mechanisms to strengthen the partnership and cooperation between both countries on different areas. Its potential should be developed fully.

The Secretary of State and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have instructed the U.S. and Portuguese Heads of Delegation to the Standing Bilateral Commission to initiate discussions as to how we can best advance our shared interests and determine areas and methods of cooperation that will contribute to the revitalization of our partnership.
