The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs will host 418 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) from 49 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and Asia for an enrichment conference December 8 to 11, 2010 in Washington, D.C.

Fulbright FLTAs assist in teaching 31 different languages in 230 colleges and universities in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Most conference events will take place at the Grand Hyatt (1000 H Street NW, Washington, D.C.)

Assistant Secretary Ann Stock will address the Fulbright participants on Thursday, December 9, at 3:20 pm. (Closed Press)

The conference brings Fulbright FLTAs from all regions of the world to Washington midway through their program in the United States to explore effective teaching methods, supplementary classroom techniques and professional skills for the semester ahead. FLTAs teach their native languages while also taking classes for a year at colleges and universities across the nation. Upon completing their exchange, FLTAs return home to teach English with refined teaching skills, increased English proficiency, and expanded knowledge of U.S. society and values.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants from over 155 countries with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Interviews with FLTAs may be arranged upon request. Press attendance is by RSVP only – contact information below.
