Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration Eric P. Schwartz will travel to Liberia from February 14 - 18, 2011.
In Liberia, Assistant Secretary Schwartz will meet with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and other Liberian government officials to express the United States’ solidarity with the people of Liberia as they host a growing number of refugees from Cote d’Ivoire. Approximately 35,000 people have crossed the border to escape violence in Cote d’Ivoire unleashed as a result of the ongoing Presidential election crisis. Assistant Secretary Schwarz will discuss the situation’s impact on host communities in Liberia and will meet with Ivoirian refugees to discuss their current humanitarian needs. Assistant Secretary Schwartz will also meet with the international and non-governmental organizations that are providing support to these refugees and will observe assistance activities in Nimba County.
