Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
March 7, 2011

Question: Has the Government of Mexico raised the issue of the ATF program “Fast and Furious” with the State Department? Did ATF inform the State Department about this program?

Answer: This operation is under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

We understand the Attorney General has asked the Justice Department’s Acting Inspector General to review concerns that have been raised about certain ATF investigative tactics relating to these matters.

For further details, we refer you to the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

We are in regular contact with counterparts in the Mexican government on all aspects of law enforcement cooperation, to include combating arms trafficking.
