The United States Agency for International Development’s Office of Food for Peace has approved a food aid contribution to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in the Central African Republic (CAR) in the amount of $6.5 million. The official handover ceremony of the donation took place in Bangui, CAR on April 5, 2011. The WFP’s protracted relief and recovery operation will provide food assistance to people impacted by ongoing armed conflicts. This donation will allow the WFP to assist 275,000 beneficiaries for approximately two months. It will be used to feed displaced people fleeing rebel incursions and banditry of the northwestern region of CAR as well as those fleeing Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) attacks in the southeast. This donation will also provide assistance to refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. Additionally WFP will be able to assist participants in food for work and seed protection activities, thereby contributing to rebuilding livelihoods.
