Deputy Secretary James Steinberg visited Bahrain on Tuesday, May 17, accompanied by Near Eastern Affairs Assistant Secretary Jeffrey D. Feltman and National Security Council Senior Director Puneet Talwar. Deputy Secretary Steinberg consulted with officers at the U.S. Embassy and met with Bahraini government officials. During his meetings, Deputy Secretary Steinberg affirmed the long-standing commitment of the U.S. to a strong partnership with both the people and the Government of Bahrain and stressed the importance of full respect for universal human rights. He urged all parties to pursue a path of reconciliation and comprehensive political dialogue.
