Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero Will Travel to Egypt and Tunisia

Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs María Otero will travel to Egypt September 10 to 12 to learn about Egypt’s democratic transition. She will have meetings with senior government officials, non-government representatives, civil society leaders, youth and journalists. She hopes to learn about Egypt’s plans for elections and will discuss topics related to civilian security, water, human rights, refugees and youth empowerment.

During her visit to Tunisia from September 13 to 15, Under Secretary Otero will meet with senior Tunisian officials and civil society representatives to discuss the country’s transition to democracy. She will also hold meetings with government and non-government representatives related to trafficking in persons, anti-corruption, support to civil society, religious minorities and youth political engagement. She will visit the Medenine Governate to discuss issues affecting Tunisian communities hosting Libyan refugees.

As Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, Maria Otero oversees the bureaus of Population, Refugees and Migration; Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs; the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons; and the Office of the Science and Technology Advisor. She also serves as the Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.
