Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs Jose W. Fernandez will host a conference entitled, “The Role of Biotechnology in Advancing African Agriculture,” on September 14, 2011. The purpose of this full-day gathering at Chesapeake Farms, Md. is to continue discussions between the African diplomatic corps and representatives of the biotech industry, non-governmental organizations, and universities, with a focus on the role of public-private partnerships and ways to improve the investment climate for agricultural development in Africa and the knowledge base of African leaders.
This conference is the third in a three-part series that Assistant Secretary Fernandez is hosting for the African diplomatic corps. The first conference, on January 20, focused on government-to-government interaction and included representatives of over 20 African countries. The second conference, on March 18, focused on private sector investment in the agriculture sector and included over 40 participants representing Africa in addition to the private sector.
