The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack earlier this week on peacekeepers of the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) outside of Zamzam camp in North Darfur. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two peacekeepers and one police advisor. Our condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.
This brazen attack on UNAMID demonstrates the continuing insecurity that exists across Darfur, and reinforces the Government of Sudan’s responsibility to protect the Darfuri people. As we mourn the loss of these brave peacekeepers, we reaffirm our strong support for UNAMID and the critical role it must play in protecting civilians. We call on the Government of Sudan to conduct a full and credible investigation into this incident, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
We also urge the Government of Sudan and Darfuri armed movements to allow UNAMID freedom of movement throughout Darfur.
