The Department of State is pleased to announce that it has received the 2011 GreenGov Presidential Award for Building the Future. The award recognizes the Department for incorporating sustainable practices and principles into all aspects of the operations of Building 84 at the Charleston, South Carolina Regional Center, thus successfully demonstrating the policy and performance goals of, “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance.” in Executive Order 13514.
Building 84 has gained LEED Platinum certification, the highest possible LEED certification level. It boasts an innovative combination of solar, geothermal, wind, and rainwater collection strategies to heat, cool, and power the facility. The facility meets all guidelines for sustainability, exceeding goals for reducing water consumption, and doing so at a significantly reduced cost compared to similar projects. Building 84 will become the Department’s first net-zero energy building, producing more energy on-site than it consumes.
Building 84 is an exemplary showcase of sustainable Federal building design and operation.
