QUESTION: Please provide a readout of the Secretary’s meeting with International Energy Agency Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven.
ANSWER: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met yesterday with International Energy Agency Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven at the Department of State.
Secretary Clinton congratulated Ms. van der Hoeven on her recent appointment as Executive Director of the IEA. She also complimented the IEA on the steps it has taken to strengthen its response to disruptions, such as its decision to release strategic oil stocks this summer to counter the loss of Libyan oil production. The Secretary welcomed the IEA’s efforts to reach out to non-member countries in order to ensure U.S. and international energy security, stable markets, and the transition to cleaner sources. She also discussed the importance of increased and sustainable access to energy in fostering development.
Secretary Clinton also used the occasion to highlight the newly formed Bureau of Energy Resources, headed by Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, Ambassador Carlos Pascual. The ENR Bureau will reinvigorate energy diplomacy with major energy producers and consumers, stimulate the market forces that can sustain transformational energy policies, and expand efforts in good governance, transparency and energy access.
