Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Maria Otero will travel to Chile from January 11 to 13 and to Colombia from January 17 to 20. Under Secretary Otero will be accompanied in Colombia by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Kathleen Fitzpatrick and USAID Assistant Administrator Mark Lopes.
In Chile, she will participate in the International Conference on Transparency and Probity in Congress and the Political Party System. She will also meet with senior officials, members of civil society and youth to discuss human rights and transitional democracy. On Friday, January 13, Under Secretary Otero will deliver a speech on civilian security and democracy at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL).
While in Colombia, Under Secretary Otero will travel to Tumaco to visit with local law enforcement officials, municipal officials, farmers, and civil society. She will also hold bilateral meetings in Bogota with senior officials and members of civil society on issues such as illicit narcotics, counterterrorism cooperation, law enforcement, human rights, internal displacement, victims and land restitution, and good governance.
