Question: What is the U.S. reaction to Kuwait’s interior ministry banning candidates from running in parliamentary elections scheduled for next month?
Answer: We have seen reports that 14 candidates have been disqualified from running in the February 2nd parliamentary elections. According to Kuwaiti law, disqualified candidates have the right to challenge this decision in the courts. We understand that two candidates have already exercised their right to do so. We look forward to seeing a diverse field of candidates taking part in free, fair and transparent elections. We note that the upcoming election will be observed by independent local monitors.
