This week U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William R. Brownfield, during his second trip to Afghanistan, met with senior Afghan and U.S. government officials in Kabul, Herat, and Parwan, and reviewed counternarcotics and rule of law programs.

Assistant Secretary Brownfield toured judicial and law enforcement facilities, including the Justice Center in Parwan, and met with a wide range of U.S. and Afghan officials, including Minister of Counternarcotics H.E. Zarar Ahmed Moqbel Osmani, Herat Provincial Governor Daud Saba, Director of Prisons, Lieutenant General Amir Muhammad Jamshid, and U.S. Ambassador Crocker.

The U.S. Department of State, in partnership with the Government of Afghanistan, will continue to provide support through Governor-led eradication and the provision of publicly available counternarcotics-related information. The U.S. government will also expand its criminal justice programs focusing on strengthening the rule of law, increasing corrections capacity, and limiting the impact of the drug trade.
