Following on the recent U.S. Government meetings on economic assistance to Cairo, on September 8 Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides will join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and more than 100 U.S. company executives as part of a delegation to promote private sector development in Egypt. This trip will focus on the second part of the two pronged economic diplomacy approach described by Secretary Clinton during her visit to Egypt in July and it will identify new business opportunities and partnerships for U.S. companies, express U.S. business confidence in Egypt, and demonstrate a commitment to Egypt’s long-term economic development.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, through its U.S. Egypt Business Council, has organized the largest ever trade delegation to the region with nearly 50 leading U.S. companies represented by more than 100 senior executives. The private sector delegation will be led by Lionel Johnson, U.S. Chamber Vice President of Turkey, Middle East, and North Africa Affairs, and Steve Farris, CEO of Apache Corporation, a private Fortune 200 company with over $10 billion in investments in Egypt.

Deputy Secretary Nides and Deputy National Security Advisor Michael Froman will lead the U.S. government delegation which includes Senior Advisor to the Secretary John Podesta, and representatives from the Department of Commerce, the United States Trade and Development Agency, and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.
