Chinese physical education professionals will travel throughout the United States from October 15-23 to exchange ideas and experiences with their U.S. counterparts, as they look to achieve the shared goals of ensuring that all sectors of the population have access to sports and recreation, and the opportunity to learn physical fitness skills.
Building on the Secretary of State’s emphasis on utilizing “smart power,” the project is part of the Sports Working Group of the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE). The CPE, launched by the Secretary of State and Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong in Beijing in 2010, aims to enhance existing people-to-people engagement by providing a high-level venue to address challenges and identify opportunities between the U.S. and China.
The six Chinese visitors represent the fields of physical fitness, sports administration, sports policy, sports business, and journalism and will meet with U.S. representatives from organizations including: the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the U.S. Olympic Committee; the Miami Police Athletic League; the National Alliance for Youth Sports; the Oregon Youth Soccer Association; and Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest.
The participants will focus on policy issues in Washington, DC, education and implementation in the Miami area, and the role of private partnerships and NGOs in Portland, Ore.
This project is being administered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ International Visitor Leadership Program and the SportsUnited program. IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. SportsUnited is the State Department’s sports diplomacy division, allowing foreign participants to learn about the United States through the lens of sports and to develop lasting relationships with U.S. peers and sports professionals.
