Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights María Otero will travel to Santiago, Chile; Lima, Peru; and Montevideo, Uruguay January 9 -19, 2013.
On January 9, Under Secretary Otero will travel to Santiago, Chile, to participate in the Second Regional Latin America Conference of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), organized by the Government of Chile. At the conference, OGP governments and civil society will review progress on implementation of OGP action plans in the region. Under Secretary Otero will meet with Chilean government officials and civil society representatives to discuss a range of issues including human rights, social inclusion, and youth engagement. She will also deliver keynote remarks in support of Chile’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Working Group’s Day of Action. Under Secretary Otero will meet with representatives of Start-Up Chile, a Chilean Government initiative aimed at attracting entrepreneurs to Chile to discuss how entrepreneurship can generate economic opportunities for youth.
On January 14, Under Secretary Otero will travel to Lima, Peru, to meet with government officials to discuss our deepening bilateral cooperation in areas including the strengthening of democratic institutions and enhancing the effectiveness of counternarcotics and other law enforcement efforts. While in Lima, the Under Secretary will also meet with a range of representatives of civil society. She will visit Tarapoto, Peru to review progress in counternarcotics and alternative development projects.
On January 16, Under Secretary Otero will travel to Montevideo, Uruguay, where she will meet with government officials, human rights groups, anti-TIP organizations, and civil society representatives to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues. Under Secretary Otero will also meet with a broad cross-section of Uruguayan youth engaged in initiatives that are changing their communities.
