Assistant Secretary Michael Posner traveled to Afghanistan February 4 to 6. While in Afghanistan, he convened a session of the U.S.-Afghan Bilateral Commission's "Promoting Shared Democratic Values" Working Group alongside members of the Afghan Government. To inform the objectives of the bilateral dialogue, he and Afghan Government officials consulted widely with civil society activists on the protection of human rights--including women's rights--in reconciliation and reintegration, the political transition and democratic processes, and the nexus between security and human rights. During the visit, he also traveled to Jalalabad for additional consultations with civil society, religious leaders and human rights and women's rights activists at the provincial level.
