Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R. Sherman and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun held the second round of the U.S.-China Middle East Dialogue in Washington, DC, June 20. This dialogue was held under the framework of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue.
The two sides discussed developments in the Middle East, with particular attention to Syria, Iran, and Middle East Peace. Under Secretary Sherman and Vice Foreign Minister Zhai also discussed ways for both countries to promote greater cooperation on regional issues and related global challenges, including energy security.
The United States reiterated its commitment to building a cooperative partnership with China and welcomed China playing a more active and positive role in the Middle East region.
The U.S. delegation included representatives from the Departments of State and Defense. Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun also met with Deputy Secretary Burns during his visit.
