The State Department hosted a meeting to discuss religious freedom with members of the delegation traveling with Vietnamese President Sang on Wednesday, July 24. Participants included Vietnamese Government officials, representatives of Vietnam’s officially recognized state-religions, and representatives of U.S. civil society groups monitoring religious freedom in Vietnam. The frank discussion addressed concerns about Vietnam’s system of religious registration, including reports of arrest, detention, and coercion of members of unregistered religious groups. We agreed to continue a dialogue on these concerns and hope this meeting will assist the Vietnamese government in expanding freedom of conscience and religion for all of its citizens.
