On July 29, 2013, Robert D. Dreher, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Environment & Natural Resources Division of the Department of Justice, and Daniel M. Ashe, Director of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service of the Department of the Interior. Representatives from 18 U.S. Government agencies participated in the meeting, underscoring the high-level attention and whole-of-government approach to this issue. The Task Force kicked off the development of the National Strategy on Combating Wildlife Trafficking.

The Task Force on Wildlife Trafficking was established by Executive Order 13648, signed by President Obama on July 1, 2013. The Executive Order calls for a national strategy that will marshal the efforts of the U.S. Government to meet this challenge at home and to assist foreign governments combating wildlife trafficking and related transnational organized crime.
