The U.S. Department of State has selected Wanderson Jackson of Brazil as September’s International Exchange Alumni Member of the Month. Throughout September, Jackson will be recognized on the International Exchange Alumni website for his leadership in promoting education and U.S. exchanges while fostering volunteerism. Each month, the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs confers this award on an outstanding alumnus or alumna of an exchange, to support alumni as they build on their experiences.
Prior to his exchange, Wanderson taught himself English and organized Pro-Sport Dance, a drug awareness program for youth that reinforces the importance of education and constructive extracurricular activities, such as dance. In 2012 Jackson participated in the Youth Ambassadors Program in the United States. From his exchange experience, Wanderson established the foundation for his non-profit Youth 4 Change. His organization is dedicated to expanding access to educational resources, developing young leaders, and promoting intercultural dialogue through programming and innovative technologies with a particular focus on social media.
In July 2013, Wanderson organized Connection USA, a conference in Roraima, Brazil emphasizing the importance of English language skills and education, and training local high school students in the development of sustainable public service projects. Exchange alumni from the Science Camp for Girls, Youth Ambassadors, and the English Immersion Program (EIP) shared their unique program experiences with the Connection USA students, motivating them to increase awareness about U.S. exchange programs in their own schools. In a state with a history of limited exchange participation with the United States, Wanderson will undoubtedly multiply the number of future exchange students from his region.
