Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell will travel to Panama City and Colon, Panama, September 15-17, to participate in the Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Americas (WEAmericas) Convention and promote activities and dialogue in support of advancing the status of women in Latin America and the Caribbean and addressing gender-based violence. On September 16, Ambassador Russell will deliver opening remarks and speak at an event capping the first day of the convention.

WEAmericas leverages public-private partnerships to increase women’s economic participation in the Western Hemisphere by reducing barriers women often confront in starting and growing small and medium enterprises. Hosted by the WEAmericas Executive Board in partnership with the Department of State and corporate partners, the 5-day convention will focus on training women entrepreneurs in the agricultural and handicraft sectors in management tools and technology that will help them grow their businesses. Convention goals include promoting and harnessing entrepreneurial cooperation, exchanging knowledge and information to generate new business opportunities, and offering women throughout the region tools and resources to advance their economic potential and professional growth.

On September 17, Ambassador Russell will travel to Colon to visit and meet members of a local non-profit that supports vulnerable women from the local community by providing them temporary shelter and training tailored to their individual needs. While in Panama, Ambassador Russell will also meet with government officials, UN Women Panama, NGO representatives, private sector leaders, and WEAmericas and Mujeres Adelante (Women Moving Forward) alumnae, who participated in training and networking in the United States on the International Visitor Leadership Program.
