U.S.-Pakistan Energy Trade Delegation - Houston

Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
November 13, 2013

U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Richard G. Olson and Pakistani Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Abbasi will lead an oil and gas trade mission to Houston, Texas on November 14-15. During the two-day mission, nearly 30 private Pakistani companies, state-owned enterprises, and oil and gas officials are expected to meet with leading U.S. energy companies to identify business opportunities, explain incentives offered by the Pakistani Government, and attract investment from the private sector to Pakistan’s oil and gas sector.

The trade mission delegation includes officials from the Pakistan Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, heads of seventeen leading Pakistani oil and gas firms, including both state-owned enterprises and private firms, and representatives from the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Commerce. The delegation immediately follows the conclusion of the fifth U.S.–Pakistan Energy Working Group in Washington, part of the Strategic Dialogue framework re-energized during Secretary Kerry’s August visit to Pakistan. That Working Group was co-chaired by Minister Abbasi as well as Pakistan’s Minister of Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and by Ambassador Carlos Pascual, U.S. Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs.

The United States and Pakistan have worked closely on a sustained basis, including as part of the Strategic Dialogue framework, to better develop and diversify Pakistan’s energy sector, a key priority of the Pakistani Government and people. The United States supports increased energy generation, an improved policy and investment climate, and better management and revenue collection by power distribution companies. The trade delegation’s consultations with investors complement their Working Group discussions on a variety of topics, including renewable energy sources.

There will be press availability during the reception on Thursday, November 14 at the Embassy Suites Hotel’s Grand Texas Ballroom at 6 p.m.

Address: 11730 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas, 77079, USA
