State Department Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies Dr. Tomicah Tillemann Travels to Warsaw, Poland for the Community of Democracies' Governing Council Meeting

Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, the State Department’s Senior Advisor for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies, will travel to Warsaw, Poland to represent the United States at the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies (CD) on December 10, 2013. The Governing Council is the highest decision making body of the Community of Democracies.

The meeting will address a broad range of issues related to democracy and democratization, including challenges facing civil society in Russia and the use of new technologies to support government interaction with citizens. Facebook will announce a new initiative to help key elected leaders in several CD countries engage with their constituents online.

While in Warsaw, Dr. Tillemann will also meet with senior Polish government officials, meet with the co-chair and administrators of CD’s LEND Network for Leaders Engaged in New Democracies, and work to advance President Obama’s Stand with Civil Society agenda. Stand with Civil Society is a joint effort by governments, civil society, and the philanthropic community to support, defend, and sustain the work of civil society worldwide.
