Question: What is the US response to Canada’s announced plan to extend its sovereignty to the Arctic, to include the North Pole?
Answer: We are aware that Canada will make a submission regarding its continental shelf to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), a technical body established under the Law of the Sea Convention. Canada has submitted preliminary information for the Arctic and not the full submission, so we have no basis to comment at this time.
