Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Russell D. Feingold will travel to Angola on January 13-16 for the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region’s (ICGLR) Fifth Ordinary Heads of State Summit.
He will then travel extensively in the DRC, visiting Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, and Bukavu, where he will meet with government representatives, civil society, the United Nations, and others working towards peace in the DRC. Special Envoy Feingold will emphasize implementation of the DRC’s commitments under the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework Agreement. Special Envoy Feingold is particularly focused on the need to move forward with preparations for local elections, including the need to complete Presidential elections by the end of 2016,and to ensure accountability.
Special Envoy Feingold will also travel to Burundi and Ethiopia for the African Union Summit. The United States stands ready to support the Great Lakes region in advancing the Framework peace process.
