Secretary of State Kerry’s Special Representative for Global Partnerships Andrew O’Brien will lead a delegation of U.S. investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, members of the Irish diaspora, and representatives from academia and civil society to Limerick, Ireland and Belfast, Northern Ireland January 27 – 30 as part of a new public-private State Department initiative, Partnership Opportunity Delegations (PODs). The Ireland-Northern Ireland POD will focus on creating potential cross-sectoral partnership opportunities that aim to boost Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, promote entrepreneurship, and increase overall economic growth.
On Monday, January 27, Special Representative O’Brien will travel to Limerick, Ireland to meet with local government officials and private sector representatives.
On Tuesday, January 28, in Limerick, Special Representative O’Brien and the delegation will attend the Irish Technology Leadership Group’s Silicon Valley Global Technology Forum. Special Representative O’Brien will deliver remarks on the importance of global partnerships that aim to provide youth with strong STEM-focused education and training.
On Wednesday, January 29, Special Representative O’Brien and the delegation will travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland to meet with local government officials to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s economic landscape. Later, they will engage with Northern Ireland’s public and private sector leaders regarding potential projects, partnerships, and business opportunities.
On Thursday, January 30, in Belfast, Special Representative O’Brien and the delegation will meet with representatives from Northern Ireland’s academic community at Belfast Metropolitan College to discuss STEM, entrepreneurship and innovation in the region. Later, they will visit the Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP) to hear from local public and civil society organizations and startups such as NISP, NISP Connect, Invest Northern Ireland, the US-NI Mentorship Program, and Young Enterprise Northern Ireland.
