Diplomacy in Action



In compliance with the E-Government Act of 2002, the State Department is developing and continuing to enhance several website features to improve customer service.

  1. In support of the Digital Government Strategy and improved customer service, the State Department is moving forward on making its web content mobile friendly:
    • A mobile solution has been implemented for more than 450 Embassy and Consulate websites around the world (see The mobile solution is device agnostic, which means all visitors accessing the sites from a feature phone, smart phone, or tablet will be served an optimized version of the site, and will be given the option to view the “desktop” version if they desire. provides full responsive design of the website via any hand-held device.
  2. To assist users in finding content on State Department websites, the Digitalgov Search search has been deployed. This search is provided by GSA at no cost to federal government agencies, allowing agencies to benefit from shared services.
  3. The State Department launched My State Department to give users the option of tailoring content to the categories of information in which they’re most interested.
  4. A “Contact Us” system includes frequently asked questions and is accessible from the “Stay Connected” box and footer on every page.
  5. In an effort to engage customers and audiences, the design enables quick access to all of the State Department’s social media platforms via the Stay Connected box on every page, “Share” links within documents, and in the footer of every page.
  6. Email Subscriptions: also offers automated email updates that are tailored to subscriber preferences. Access to that service is available through the Stay Connected box on every page.
  7. Video, to include some live streams of the Secretary’s events, the Daily Press Briefing, and other key State Department events, are available from the main home page, individual pages,, and through the Stay Connected box on every page.
  8. To enhance the ability of the public to quickly see where the Secretary of State has traveled, implemented a real-time Google map to track the Secretary’s travel.
