These information sheets accompanied Under Secretary Hughes' testimony before the House Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs on April 19, 2007.

Slide shows the drop in student visas issued after Sept. 11 started to reverse in FY 2004 and the increase in visas issued continues   Slide shows that scholarships for U.S. students abroad tripled in 10 years, from 850 in 1997 to 2400 in 2007

Slide shows the Fulbright American Program has expanded to 1,309 grants in 2006    Slide shows the Fulbright Foreign Program has expanded to 2, 822 grants to visiting students in 2006

Slide shows the number of English teaching assistants rose from 69 in 1996 to 112 in 2002 and jumped to 353 in 2006   Slide shows that National Security Language Initiative Scholarship Awards drew 4200 applicants for the first 165 awards in 2006 and the program will expand in 2007

Slide shows that Gilman Scholarships increase diversity 16 percent African American participants vs. 3 percent in traditional programs and like figures for Hispanics and Asian-Americans.    Slide shows that the number of participants in English Access Microscholarship Program, English Language Fellow Program, and E-Teacher Scholarship Program have increased over the past few years.

Slide shows that the number of Regional English Language Offices and the budget for those offices has increased from 16 to 18 and from 1.06 million to 1.93 million respectively  in three years.    Slide shows that more U.S. officials are participating in interviews and talk shows on Arab TV and radio and 82 percent of interviews are conducted in Arabic

Slide shows U.S. officials interviews on European media increased from 140 in Sept. 2006 to and estimated 165 in Mar. 2007   Slide shows that 1000 key people at State, DoD, and other USG agencies receive Rapid Response Unit reports daily. RRU report is also sent to 70 distribution lists and posted on State intranet.

Slide shows State Department outreach to women is increasing. Examples include Jordan Business Womens summit, Women of Courage Awards, International Women Mentoring program.    Slide shows Citizen Dialogue connects Muslim-Americans with the World.

Slide shows Public Diplomacy Partnerships, including Private Sector Summit on Public Diplomacy, Partnership for Lebanon, Global Cultural Initiative, South Asia Earthquake Relief Effort    slide shows Iranian Exchanges are growing in Sports and Cultural diplomacy as well as the Internationla Visitor Leadership program

Slide shows that the International Information Programs Persian Web Site reached 125 percent more Iranians in Feb. 2007 than Feb. 2006    Slide shows how International Information Programs is providing public dipomacy tools via the internet -- including 195 embassy websites in English and 6 other languages as well as other programs.

Slide shows that improved photos, reference and language links earned USINFO website a top-5 award from GSA in 2006.    Slide shows that public diplomacy web chats draw visitors from around the world, and transcripts from chats draw readers years after the events and have been translated into many languages

Slide shows State Department Sports diplomacy programs are reaching youth in Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Iran, and more countries around the world.    Slide shows Department Cultural programs have reached youth in Nepal.
